I stayed at Casa del Canonico late in August, and I look forward to visiting again. They had only been open a few weeks at that time. The owner is fluent in English (and French and German too, she said) and will help you create an itinerary of local sights. Mondovi' is a charming hilltop town, ideally situated for anyone who wants to visit the Langhe hills or the Ligurian coast or just enjoy the marvelous food and wine of Piedmont. Casa del Canonico is in the historical center of upper Mondavi' (there is a lower town; the two are connected by a funicular) just off the main piazza. There are 3 bedrooms, each with bath, plus a large living room that opens to a small balcony, and a breakfast room. I stayed in the largest room, "the suite," which was pretty, quiet, and comfortable. The very high and beautiful beamed ceiling (16th or 17th century, I was told) has an old fresco running beneath it, and there is a small non-working fireplace of the same era in the room. Tall windows run nearly floor to ceiling, and are hung with draperies as well as the typical Italian double shutters. The bathroom is huge and very modern and comfortable. The room was decorated in taupe and light blue against the white walls and old wood--I thought it very pretty. In addition to the large bed, armoire, and bureau, there is a sitting area with a round table, chairs, and tv. I took breakfast in the hotel; they served an Italian buffet with local cakes and cheeses, cereals, and fruits, and the coffee was good (very important!). ||Casa del Canonico is a nice place for a single person or couple, and it would also be great for a group of friends or 3 couples. I've been fantasizing about going back with the "adults" in the family for a little Italian get-away. (Another note: if like me you can't get enough of Piedmontese cuisine, eat at Ezzolino, an amazing restaurant in the old town.) I think this small hotel is a gem.

Two of my colleagues and I stayed at Casa Del Canonico (CDC) for 2 weeks in September 2010. I booked the rooms after reading the one review on here and I have to say that this B&B is a gem! The rooms are located on the first floor of a fully renovated 1000-year-old building in the city center which was part of the original city plan. Quite a fascinating history! ||||If you are lucky enough to get Room #2, you are fully immersed in the 1000-year-old charm. Barbara, the proprietor, is an excellent host!!! Over the two weeks of getting to know her I'm now proud to call her a friend. She worked hard to make sure things were perfect with the rooms, with breakfast, and with finding local food, beverage, and sightseeing opportunities. She is well connected and quite knowledgeable about local events and areas to visit. We never went away hungry or under-caffeinated in the morning.||||If you're going to Mondovi, look Barbara up -- she will take good care of you! ||||Oh and request the eggs for breakfast - magnifico!
